Professor Matt Schaefer, and his Yeutter Institute Colleagues – Director Jill O’Donnell, Acklie Chair Ed Balestreri, and Non-Resident Fellow Kellie Mieman Hock (McLarty Associates) discussed the impact of recent tariff actions and trade agreements on U.S. and Nebraska agriculture at the Farm Management and Outlook Conference in Omaha in mid-August. Professor Schaefer addresses the legal vehicles for the new tariffs, including Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, Sections 301 and 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) as well as legal challenges in US courts to the IEEPA-based tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration. The discussion also included trade agreements concluded by the Trump Administration and reactions of foreign governments to the tariffs.
