Biography

Professor Emeritus Frank joined the faculty in 1972. He received his A.B. degree from Duke University in 1966 and a J.D. (cum laude, Order of the Coif) from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1972. From l966 to l968, he served in the Peace Corps in Libya. He was employed with the Legal Services Center for Dane County in Madison, Wisconsin, prior to coming to the University of Nebraska. Although now retired, Professor Frank still teaches Client Interviewing and Counseling and continues to help with the College's alumni magazine, The Nebraska Transcript, as editor emeritus. He also continues to serve as one of the coaches of Law College's Client Counseling Competition team. For five years, Professor Frank served as Associate Dean of the College, working with financial aid, admissions and student advisement. In 2005, he was awarded the Outstanding Service Award by the College of Law's Alumni Council.

Courses

Client Interviewing and Counseling Law 696/G (1-4 cr hr)
Introduction to the basics of legal interviewing (lawyer interaction with a client for the purpose of identifying the client's problem and gathering information on which the solution to that problem can be based) and counseling (a process in which lawyers help clients reach decisions). Class discussion of reading materials and videotaped demonstrations, and role play exercises.

Mediation Law 710/G (4 cr hr)
Process in which a trained neutral third party assists others in resolving a dispute or planning a transaction. Training in basic mediation skills through readings, demonstrations, simulations, and the keeping of a mediation notebook. The nature of mediation and its relationship to other forms of dispute resolution, the nature of conflict, models and styles of mediation, negotiation theory, communication skills, the interest-based mediation process, the representation of clients in mediation, special issues relating to attorney mediators, and mediators standards and ethics.
