The University of Nebraska College of Law held its sixth annual Citizenship Clinic on Saturday, March 8. Nebraska Law students and attorney volunteers assisted individuals interested in self-filing applications to become citizens of the United States.

Sixteen individuals were assisted by volunteers during this year’s Citizenship Clinic. In addition to College of Law Immigration Clinic students, 22 law students assisted those applying to become citizens. The volunteers were also joined by Professor Carol Subiabre and six of her students from the Spanish for Law undergraduate course as well as a student from Professor Sara Ruser Houston’s Civil Liberties: Issues of Fairness and Equality undergraduate course. Attorneys Emma Franklin, ’22, Tanner Carlson, Natasha Naseem, ’22, and Jodi Garrelts, ’15, also volunteered as form reviewers and legal counsel.

Immigration Clinic students Darlene Gomez, ’25, Annabella Glatte, ’25, led the Citizenship Clinic this year including publicity, packet creation, volunteer recruitment and pre-screening applicants.

Volunteers assisted applicants in filling out the citizenship forms, ran background checks to verify that there were no unidentified issues that might bear on applicants’ abilities to naturalize, and gave them a “next steps” checklist to use when submitting their naturalization applications.
