Summer Externship Program
Join the Nebraska Innocence Clinic (NIC) through our full-time summer externship program! Gain valuable experience by asssisting with post-conviction investigation and litigation for wrongfully convicted Nebraskans in state or federal court.
This opportunity gives you academic credit with your home institution while gaining hands-on experience in a real-life legal setting. We are looking for detail-oriented, intellectually curious, and hard-working student attorneys ready to join our team!

Full-time summer externship, in-person
Credits Offered
Credits are subject to your home university’s parameters and requirements, as the positions require you to participate in your school’s summer externship options. Most students will be offered enough hours to earn 3-6 credits at most schools.
Roles and Responsibilities
Summer externs will work under the supervision of an attorney, Clinic Director Elizabeth Cole, and alongside NIC staff. Externs will conduct investigation and litigation on behalf of wrongfully convicted Nebraskans. Tasks may include:
- drafting briefs and memoranda
- legal research
- document and case review
- investigative planning
- client counseling and interviewing
- interviewing witnesses, former attorneys and law enforcement, etc.
- scene visits
- consulting experts
- litigating on behalf of innocent clients
Qualifications
- Active registration at a law school (JD or LLM)*
- Rising 3Ls at an ABA-accredited school can be senior certified to represent clients as student attorneys in court.
- Completion of at least the first year of law school
- Good academic standing
