CSO Spotlight

jpiskName: Jessica Piskorski
Class Year: 2009
Position: Assistant General Counsel
Employer: Credit Management Services, Inc.
Location: Grand Island, Neb.

Spotlight Experience: I was a summer associate for two summers at Cline Williams in Lincoln before finding my post-graduate employment at Credit Management. Working for a firm is much different than working as in-house counsel for a busy, and growing, collection agency. Although I had never thought about working in the credit and collections industry while in law school, what did appeal to me about this job was the family-friendly nature of the company, the regular workday hours, and the fact that I would get to use my litigation skills that I learned in law school. Everyday at work I get to attend hearings and trials in court and see a variety of legal pleadings that, in a firm, I might never have even utilized.

A piece of career advice that's worked for me: When my husband and I decided to move to this area, I used my local contacts to find me this great job. I had never even heard of Credit Management until another attorney in Grand Island pointed me in this direction, and I'm so glad he did! Remember, you don't have to have your mind made up on the kind of law you are going to practice. I knew what kind of lifestyle I wanted to live and that I wanted to use my litigation skills in my job, and Credit Management ended up being the perfect fit.

jeffbaumertName: Adam Fulton
Class Year: 2009
Position: Summer Associate
Employer: Wood, Smith, Henning & Berman
Location: Las Vegas, Nev.

Spotlight Experience: This past summer I worked for Wood, Smith, Henning & Berman. The thing that I loved most about my time in Vegas, besides the buffets, was the range of projects I was allowed to work on. I was able to see what an attorney at the firm does. I did everything from attending depositions and drafting briefs, to conducing on-site inspections for our clients. I was also given some really interesting research projects. It was a great experience to work on so many different things, and the lawyers I worked with were amazing.

Some of the fun summer activities the firm provided included: baseball games with the firm, dinner at the horse track, happy hours, many excellent lunches, and the end of the summer casino night.

A piece of career advice that's worked for me: When you are interviewing, be yourself and relax. More important than grades is how you portray yourself. Steve Henning, one of our alums, came and did on-campus interviews. I think that my ability to relax and be myself in that interview got me my job. Having the Nebraska connection helps immensely. Working through our alumni network is a great way to find a job.

jeffbaumertName: Jeff Baumert
Class Year: 2010
Position: Study Abroad & Law Clerk
Employer: First National of Nebraska, Inc.
Location: Omaha, Neb.
Study Abroad Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Spotlight Experience: I earned three credit-hours studying abroad in one of the most exciting cities on the planet. I went hang gliding, played soccer on Copacabana Beach, and attended a sold-out soccer match at Maracana Stadium.

When I returned to Nebraska, I worked as a law clerk at First National of Nebraska, Inc., a financial holding company. It was a 50% split of banking law and federal statute compliance. While there, I attended shareholder meetings and provided legal advice to subsidiary financial institutions.

A piece of career advice that's worked for me: Be persistent with emloyers. Call back every so often to bug them about an interview or decision if they are dragging their feet.

normareynoldsName: Norma Jeanise Reynolds
Class Year: 2010
Position: 2008 Summer Associate
Employer: Fraser Stryker, PC, LLO
Location: Omaha, Neb.

Spotlight Experience: "What I enjoyed most about working as a summer associate at Fraser Stryker was the level of responsibility I was given. I worked with attorneys on many of the top projects at the firm, even when long-time clients and millions of dollars were involved. Moreover, I had the opportunity to consider legal issues for some of the firm's top public charities and private foundations. I gained the utmost respect for attorneys I worked with because they sought to be ethical in the practice of law and were committed to clients and the community around them.

Fraser Stryker attorneys also made sure summer associates had fun! They often treated us to lunch downtown and set up informal social events with partners and associates to help us become better acquainted. Some of our activities included attending the College World Series, framing a house with Habitat for Humanity, watching 'South Pacific' at the Omaha Community Playhouse, and touring Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo, with the additional bonus of seeing the penguins behind the glass! My family still jokes that I created the pictures in Photoshop."

A little known fact about me: "I love sweets, and I even keep candy in my locker.  See me if you are having a bad day!"

A piece of career advice that's worked for me: "Just be yourself! It's got you this far. Let your attitude 'shine' and your work product sparkle!"
