The University of Nebraska Space and Telecom Law Program is working in conjunction with and acting as a secretariat for the Association of Space Explorers (ASE) on their Near Earth Object (NEO) project. Initial Planning for a April 2009 conference on NEOs: Risks and Opportunities is already underway. Thank you for your inquiry regarding the University of Nebraska College of Law’s Space and Telecommunications LL.M (Master of Laws). The space and telecommunications law initiative was launched in the Spring 2006 and Law College hosted a major conference March 2, 2007 titled “Security and Risk Management in a New Space Era: Military, Commercial and Tourism Dimensions” that included General Cartwright, then Commander of US Strategic Command, currently Vice-Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as our keynote speaker.
The creation of an LL.M. degree was unanimously approved by the law faculty and other university bodies. Final approval occurred in the early summer of 2007. The Law College will begin accepting LL.M. applications December 1, 2007 for students in our first year class enrolling in August 2008.
We anticipate that our LL.M. program will be limited to roughly 10 students per year so as to ensure the highest quality student body and ensure that each student in the program receives individualized attention in terms of academic advising, thesis supervision, and career placement assistance. This LL.M. is the first of its kind in the United States.
