Overview of Services

Career Counseling and Planning
Through one on one meetings with students, we help identify career goals and interests, establish job search strategies, and refine application materials. Students are encouraged to make individual appointments to plan and update employment strategies and resumes. To schedule an appointment with Dean Everman, call 472-5130 or e-mail teverman2@unl.edu.

Job Postings and Resume Collections
Job opportunities are received in the Career Services Office from a variety of sources. Employers may contact the office directly through our webpage. The CSO also solicits postings from local and national employers, as well as other law schools. All job postings are managed through ROSCOE, our online system for career opportunities and education, powered by Symplicity. Students are trained to access this service and search its extensive database of jobs. Some employers prefer resume collections to posting a job directly or interviewing on campus. Resume collections are also coordinated in ROSCOE and are posted alongside other job openings.

Educational Programs, Workshops, and Seminars
Students are offered numerous workshops, panel discussions, and informational sessions throughout the academic year. These presentations utilize practicing attorneys, alumni, and career services staff to target specific student career interests and needs. Some of the subjects covered include: preparing for the job search, judicial clerkships, non-traditional careers, starting your own practice, and bar examination preparation. At the beginning of each semester, a list of upcoming programming is made available to students in ROSCOE.

Mock Interview Program
Each year the Career Services Office organizes mock interviews to help students gain experience and confidence in the interview process. Local attorneys and other career professionals volunteer to interview students, critique their resumes, and give advice on how to improve their interviewing skills. Organized programs take place each fall and spring, but individual interviews can be arranged by contacting Dean Everman at teverman2@unl.edu.

On-Campus Interviews
Every year prospective employers visit the University of Nebraska College of Law to recruit students for summer and post-graduate employment. The Career Services Office coordinates these on-campus interviews for employers from a wide range of geographical regions. On-campus interview sessions are held in the fall and spring of each academic year.

Career Resource Library
Books, bulletins, and other resource materials are available to all students in the Career Services Office's Resource Room (Room 179C) and the Schmid Law Library. Among other topics, students can research legal practice areas, geographical areas, specific employers, bar examination requirements, and post-graduate academic programs. We strive to keep updated materials available in the CSO Resource Room and welcome suggestions from students and alumni for new acquisitions.

CSO Spotlight

jeffbaumertName: Adam Fulton
Class Year: 2009
Position: Summer Associate
Employer: Wood, Smith, Henning & Berman
Location: Las Vegas, Nev.

Spotlight Experience: This past summer I worked for Wood, Smith, Henning & Berman. The thing that I loved most about my time in Vegas, besides the buffets, was the range of projects I was allowed to work on. I was able to see what an attorney at the firm does. I did everything from attending depositions and drafting briefs, to conducing on-site inspections for our clients. I was also given some really interesting research projects. It was a great experience to work on so many different things, and the lawyers I worked with were amazing.

Some of the fun summer activities the firm provided included: baseball games with the firm, dinner at the horse track, happy hours, many excellent lunches, and the end of the summer casino night.

A piece of career advice that's worked for me: When you are interviewing, be yourself and relax. More important than grades is how you portray yourself. Steve Henning, one of our alums, came and did on-campus interviews. I think that my ability to relax and be myself in that interview got me my job. Having the Nebraska connection helps immensely. Working through our alumni network is a great way to find a job.

jeffbaumertName: Jeff Baumert
Class Year: 2010
Position: Study Abroad & Law Clerk
Employer: First National of Nebraska, Inc.
Location: Omaha, Neb.
Study Abroad Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Spotlight Experience: I earned three credit-hours studying abroad in one of the most exciting cities on the planet. I went hang gliding, played soccer on Copacabana Beach, and attended a sold-out soccer match at Maracana Stadium.

When I returned to Nebraska, I worked as a law clerk at First National of Nebraska, Inc., a financial holding company. It was a 50% split of banking law and federal statute compliance. While there, I attended shareholder meetings and provided legal advice to subsidiary financial institutions.

A piece of career advice that's worked for me: Be persistent with emloyers. Call back every so often to bug them about an interview or decision if they are dragging their feet.

normareynoldsName: Norma Jeanise Reynolds
Class Year: 2010
Position: 2008 Summer Associate
Employer: Fraser Stryker, PC, LLO
Location: Omaha, Neb.

Spotlight Experience: "What I enjoyed most about working as a summer associate at Fraser Stryker was the level of responsibility I was given. I worked with attorneys on many of the top projects at the firm, even when long-time clients and millions of dollars were involved. Moreover, I had the opportunity to consider legal issues for some of the firm's top public charities and private foundations. I gained the utmost respect for attorneys I worked with because they sought to be ethical in the practice of law and were committed to clients and the community around them.

Fraser Stryker attorneys also made sure summer associates had fun! They often treated us to lunch downtown and set up informal social events with partners and associates to help us become better acquainted. Some of our activities included attending the College World Series, framing a house with Habitat for Humanity, watching 'South Pacific' at the Omaha Community Playhouse, and touring Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo, with the additional bonus of seeing the penguins behind the glass! My family still jokes that I created the pictures in Photoshop."

A little known fact about me: "I love sweets, and I even keep candy in my locker.  See me if you are having a bad day!"

A piece of career advice that's worked for me: "Just be yourself! It's got you this far. Let your attitude 'shine' and your work product sparkle!"
